Clear Mortgage Advice for Self-Employed Canadians
I’m Owen Langis, a Calgary-based mortgage broker who specializes in helping business owners, incorporated professionals, contractors, and sole proprietors find mortgage programs and lenders that understand self-employed income.

“A strong business should not be reduced to one number on a tax return when applying for a mortgage.”
That belief shapes how I review every self-employed mortgage file.
Why I chose to help business owners
Business Owners Deserve a Mortgage Strategy Built Around the Full Picture
Traditional mortgage qualification often starts and ends with the taxable income reported on a personal tax return. For a business owner, that number may not show retained earnings, eligible add-backs, salary and dividend planning, strong cash flow or the real stability of the company.
I built my practice around understanding that gap. My role is to review how your income is structured, identify the lender programs most likely to understand it and present the application clearly.
The goal is not to force every borrower into an alternative mortgage. It is to find the most suitable path available—starting with strong prime options whenever the file supports them.
Who I help
Specialized Guidance for the Way You Earn
Different business structures create different qualification challenges. The right starting point is understanding how income reaches you and how lenders are likely to view it.
Incorporated Business Owners
For borrowers receiving salary, dividends or a combination of income while retaining money in the corporation.
Professional Corporations
For physicians, dentists, lawyers, accountants and other professionals operating through a corporation.
Sole Proprietors
For borrowers whose business expenses and tax planning can make taxable income look lower than actual earning strength.
Commission Earners
For real estate professionals, salespeople and advisors whose income can vary meaningfully from year to year.
Contractors & Consultants
For professionals with project income, variable contracts, incorporated income or a shorter self-employment history.
Oil & Gas Industry
For oil & gas workers navigating contract income, camp rotations, and T4A earnings that don't fit a standard paystub.

A Bit More About Me
Off the clock, I'm still coaching.
Mortgages are what I do professionally, but if you catch me outside of work, I'm probably at the rink or out on the course. I coach hockey, and I've found the same things that make a good coach — patience, clear communication, and actually knowing your team — are exactly what make a good mortgage broker too.
Golf is where I unwind, and it's taught me the same lesson every self-employed client already knows: consistency beats a single great shot. That's the approach I bring to your file — steady, thorough, and no shortcuts.
